Kitchen Remodeling in Berkeley and the East Bay Since 1987

4.8 from 65 Google reviews

HDR's in-house architect, designers and carpenters plan and build kitchens and baths for older Berkeley and Oakland homes. Work does not start until every material is on site and inspected.

An East Bay team that plans every detail before demo day

HDR Remodeling has handled kitchen remodeling in Berkeley, Oakland and the nearby East Bay since 1987. The firm's architect, designers, estimator, project managers and carpenters all work for HDR, so the people who draw your kitchen are the people who build it.

Many of the homes it works on are older, and the team aims to add modern function without losing their character.

HDR's process is built to keep the build short. Materials are ordered after you sign, and construction does not begin until every item is on the job site and inspected.

A lead carpenter is on site each day, and the head of production checks in about every other day and every Friday.

Kitchen Remodeling

Custom kitchens planned around how you cook and gather, from galley kitchens in Berkeley bungalows to open kitchens with islands in Oakland. HDR's NARI award list includes Regional Contractor of the Year kitchen wins in 2020 and 2023.

Bathroom Remodeling

Primary baths, guest baths and new bathrooms added where none existed. Designers handle tile, vanities and fixtures, and the build team installs them to the approved plans. Recent baths range from Berkeley and Albany to Piedmont, Oakland and Kensington.

Whole-Home and Historic Remodels

Kitchen, dining, living and bedroom remodels that open older floor plans while keeping original details. The design team specializes in historic Bay Area homes and works with an in-house California licensed architect to solve technically challenging layouts.

ADUs and Garage Conversions

Backyard ADUs, studio offices and garage conversions planned with HDR's in-house architect, designers and builders. HDR won a Chrysalis Award for an ADU in 2019, and a recent blog post covers a Berkeley garage turned into a multi-use room.

Basements, Attics and Outdoor Living

Unused basements and attics turned into living space, plus decks, patios and outdoor kitchens from HDR's landscape design-build team. Each one follows the same design, permit and build steps HDR uses for a kitchen or bath.

03

HDR was truly an amazing company to partner with on our home addition project. They were on time, on schedule, and on budget - super rare in this space. The design is exactly what we envisioned and couldn't have been better, and the build team executed it to spec. The addition is top quality and we are so thrilled with it!

Common questions from Berkeley and Oakland homeowners

Is the first meeting free?

Yes. HDR starts with a complimentary visit to your home to review your wish list and walk the space. Next comes a complimentary meeting at its office and design studio, where you look at design options and estimated cost ranges. Most clients sign a design agreement at that meeting if both sides want to go ahead.

Why won't construction start right after I sign?

HDR orders your materials once the contract is signed and the deposit is in, and it does not start work until all of them are on the job site and inspected. That way your kitchen or bath is not torn apart while you wait on a late cabinet or tile delivery.

Who will be at my house during the build?

Your assigned Lead Carpenter is on site every day unless you are told otherwise. The Head of Production visits about every other day and always on Friday. You also get weekly progress reports and access to HDR's project management software to track milestones and selections.

Can you update an older home without losing its character?

That is a focus for HDR. Its design team specializes in historic Bay Area homes and aims to keep each home's character while adding modern function. One Berkeley client wrote that the team kept the style and sensibility of their bungalow while bringing in new ideas.

Do you handle permits and offer a warranty?

Yes. After the construction contract is signed, HDR files for building permits and zoning approval. When the job is done, a walkthrough confirms every detail, and HDR's Peace of Mind warranty coverage extends well beyond the industry-standard warranty period for your remodel.
